Football Season

have a confession to make: I love football. But probably not in the ways most people do… I don’t follow stats or rosters very closely, nor do I know all the players’ names. I don’t really remember important games, or understand all the reasons those yellow flags fly onto the field at the tiniest mistake. But I love football culture. You know; getting together with friends, wearing our team’s colors, cheering and yelling and getting angry at the refs… Seriously?? His toe was clearly in bounds!

You see, for me, it’s not really about a bunch of guys running around a field chasing each other and a brown leather ball. It’s about camaraderie. It’s about pizza and nachos and bringing your favorite six-pack of beer for everyone to try. It’s about crisp evenings in Autumn, as the leaves start to change color. It’s about rooting for our heroes, as offense and defense collide in a crunch of sweat and muscle. It’s about being as emotionally involved in the game as the brilliant, stressed-out, angry coach.

And it’s about that miracle second, just before the clock runs out, when a receiver makes an impossible catch under heavy coverage, and suddenly everyone in the room, everyone in the sports bar, everyone at home in front of their TV’s, is on their feet yelling in victory! Yessss!! Oh my gosh, did you see that??

Together; being a team, with our team. That’s football. And I love it!
