Globe-trotter, nomad, wanderer, Gypsetter. Yeah, all of those words pretty much fit this little Boise blogger! I’ve been traveling since I was born. In fact, my mom delivered me in Tangier, Morocco, while my parents were working abroad with an organization called YWAM, which I loosely describe as “a kind of Christian Peace Corps.” By the time I was 25, I had visited over 20 countries, and lived in 6. Despite being uprooted a lot, the crazy thing is that I liked it. Adventure, exploring, new people, new foods… What a heckuva way to grow up! I crave new things all the time; plop me down with a map and a few bucks in the middle of any city in the world, and just let me explooooore.

When emerging fashion label Weekend Society contacted me about a blog collab for their adorable tops, I was instantly drawn to this one. Gypsetter is like Gypsy and Jet-setter combined, which very much fits my heart & soul! The cutout sides were a little expose-y for my comfort, but paired with a sequin tube top from Express and a rad jacket, I made the Gypsetter tank fit my body type and my personal style.

Do you like how I put it together? How would you style this tank? Tell me below in the comments!

XOXO,
Tanya

Fall fashion is afoot. Back-to-school shoppers are packing local stores, and school supply lists are circulating like hot cakes. But the most interesting trend that has everyone buzzing so far this year, is … the notable lack of trends!

Hear me out.

In recent history, “trends” were defined by the decade. Everyone wore similar clothes in the 1920s, ’40s, ’60s, etc. It’s how you can tell what era that strange faded photo of your parents is from. The last few years, however, it seems as though the fashion industry hit a fast-forward button, bringing trends around yearly, and then seasonally, so that nearly every three months you may feel the urge to redo your entire closet.

This year, however, hyper-trending fast-fashion seems to be having a negative effect, sucking the creativity out of designers and burning out consumers, not to mention burning holes in everyone’s wallets. This fall, shoppers and designers alike are putting the brakes on the over-proliferation of trends, calling instead for the fashion industry to just … slow … down.

This season, you will still see new concepts and innovative outfits trending across the country, but the good news is that past trends and styles are sticking around. You don’t have to ditch your wardrobe to stay in style. Instead, work on incorporating a few key pieces that you love into what you’re already rocking. If you loved the ’70s styles of summer, for example, I have good news for you: Bohemian fashions are still going strong.

Here are some other micro-trends and new fashions you’ll see in stores. Have fun with the ideas that resonate with your style.

Shimmer and shine: Fall fabrics and textures are rich and luxurious, embracing velvets, silks, furs and deep jewel-tone colors. Top your favorite black jeans with a burgundy blouse and silver jewelry, or go all out with a floor-sweeping navy blue velvet dress for head-turning drama. Look for rich brocades, floral patterns and shimmery fabrics, a la Studio 54 glam and decadence.

retro hunny plaid dressPlay in plaids: Last year’s ’90s-grunge styles are also holding strong. From capes and dresses to a classic lumberjack shirt tied around your rocker T-shirt and jeans, plaid continues to dominate the fashion landscape for both men and women. For a modern take on this classic trend, eschew the typical “schoolgirl” skirt and wear your plaid in unexpected ways, like a fitted jacket, tartan backpack or the custom-made rockabilly dress (pictured above) that I commissioned from local designer Retro Hunny (retrohunny@gmail.com). I’ve even seen plaid wedding dresses shock runway audiences with their simultaneous audacity and ability to invoke a highlander-esque magic.

Culottes: Whether you’re a lover or a hater, there’s no denying that culottes are huge in fashion right now. For fall, they look best worn with a sturdy wedge sandal or tall ankle boot for limited skin exposure. If you’re opting for printed culottes, be sure to find a pair that’s wide and flowy so that it almost appears to be a full skirt. Pair it with a tailored, printed blouse or jacket. If you’re wanting to dabble conservatively into this trend, I recommend a denim pair for comfort and versatility.

Nerdy chic: Take a cue from Gwyneth Paltrow’s character in “The Royal Tenenbaums” and pile on pastels in 1960s candy colors. Shirt dresses, varsity jackets, quilted fabrics, structured satchels, brown brogues and sport-infused pieces are the way to go to achieve this style. It’s part 1970s sportif, part nerdy schoolgirl, and part dowdy grandma. Sound unappealing? It’s remarkably chic, when put together well, but this look definitely takes confidence and attitude in high doses to achieve.

Leg up: Keep warm in the latest incarnation of patterned stockings, which range from sexy to playful in all ranges of colors and styles. It’s easy to go beyond fishnets and make a bold statement instead in stripes, bows, plaids and all manner of swirls and florals. Be careful when mixing patterns, though. Don’t wear paisley tights with a striped skirt, for example. Tights make your legs the statement piece, so keep them the focus of attention by turning the volume down on the rest of your ensemble. (Photo below from All About Socks in Boise.)fall fashion trends stylespygirl

Shoes: The newest boot style is the mid-shaft ankle boot, which is higher than the typical bootie and worn fitted or laced (jump back up to the plaid photo above, for an example!) Dress it up, with a pointy-toe, shiny patent leather and sturdy block heel. They are best worn with culottes, cropped pants or a longer skirt. Platform boots and shoes are still going strong, as are classic pointy-toe pumps. Doc Marten’s-style boots are still popular, as are platform and military styles. It’s very ’90s grunge to pair chunky black ankle boots with a long floral dress and denim jacket.

fall fashion trends stylespygirlHandbags: Backpacks are always great for back to school, but this season they’re also a huge trend for the grown-up crowd. Look for statement backpacks with words or patterns that you love, like this red one above from local leather craftsman ifeelgoodtoday.net, and customize it with another major trend in handbags: purse charms. Everyone from Louis Vuitton to COACH (Black Leather Rucksack with Feather & Stars charm pictured above) is creating adorable charms. They’re a great way to show your style (and own a small piece of your favorite designer brand without the hefty price tag).

kids fall fashion trends

Daphne & Ellia, clothes by Justice / Ben and Moby, clothes and backpacks by Nordstrom Rack / Never Grow Up shirt by Huckleberry Threads

Children’s wear: For the first time in decades, it seems as though jeans are beginning to fall out of favor with the younger crowd. They are being replaced by athletic styles like sweatpants and track pants, yoga pants and leggings, and basically anything kids can run from the classroom to PE. in without having to change clothes. Bohemian looks are in for young girls, and statement coats in fun colors will be hot once the weather turns cold.

Kids love soft textures, so watch for faux fur and shearling on everything from jackets to shoes. High tops are a must for every kid; for boys, bright colors are king, while your little girl will probably pine for blingy, bejeweled accents like Skecher’s Twinkle Toes, or the silver glitter high tops from Justice pictured on Daphne in the photo above.

huckleberry moby d

Statement sweatshirts and T-shirts are very popular, like the “Never Grow Up, Never Surrender” shirt from local children’s designer Huckleberry Threads. Call it a hipster invasion of the schoolyard, but many boys and girls are also embracing classic accessories, like bow ties, suspenders and fedoras. Accessories are a fun and inexpensive way for kids to personalize their look.

For men: I asked Ashley Barkley, a local fashion stylist and H&M “Next Face” spokesmodel, about her predictions for menswear this fall. She told me that for men, the “Americana Heritage” look is huge. Must-have items for this style are warm earthy pieces, like beat leather belts and boots, denim jackets, slim cargo pants and joggers, and flannel shirts, which add a campfire-like, woodsy feel. Camel is the new fall neutral, Barkley said. “Discerning” gentleman, she added, also should look for items like gum-soled shoes, knits inspired by graphic art and grooming practices that enhance the overall look (fragrances, shave habits, groomed beards, etc.).mens fall fashion

I had the fun pleasure of exploring the Seattle waterfront while taking photos for COACH’s Instagram, with fabulous photographer Lauren Max. We had such a blast, from the gorgeous views, to people-watching, to ice cream in the pier! I grew up in this area, and the waterfront is my happy place. 🙂 I used to love coming downtown to the boardwalk area, so it was really nice to be here again, hanging out, taking in the sights & sounds (and that glorious fishy saltwater smell!), and snapping some shots of this beautiful place for COACH. Enjoy!

O Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen and down the mountainside
The summer’s gone and all the roses falling
‘Tis you, ’tis you must go and I must bide.

There’s something about Fall that brings the Irish girl out in me, even moreso than other seasons. It’s as though the sound of falling leaves and smell of damp earth on cool, misty mornings transports me to another time, another place…

For Fall 2015 fashion, Tartan plaids are coming out as strong as they usually do, but this time around they’re showing their proud colors in unexpected ways. From backpacks to wedding gowns, this classic pattern still marches strong, and connects my heart to something timeless. Listen closely… Can you hear the bagpipes wailing in the distance?

I love finding pieces that transition between seasons well, and stand the test of time. This outfit is such a perfect combo for me, personally! I am a HUGE a fan of dresses, because I find them so easy to style around. Start with a great day dress, and you can change everything about it, by what you add to it! Picture this dress with a black moto jacket and Doc Marten-style boots. Totally different, right? Or with a denim jacket and sneakers. See where I’m going with this? A long, cozy sweater and shearling-trimmed wedge boots… I could go on and on!

My friend Retro Hunny made this dress for me, custom-fit for every curve. She’s amazing! She also made my Tanya top for summer, which you can view here (along with the cutest baby lamb pics!) She can make just about anything – email her if YOU want a dress like mine that’s fit just for YOU, check out her Facebook page for ordering info!

With all the tech jewelry and accessories coming out these days, it’s hard to know what’s going to work best with my needs & lifestyle. The Apple watch, for example, looks really cool, but will I wear it every day? When I came across the Ringly, though, I just knew… Now THAT is something I want!

The Ringly is designed to light up and vibrate when a notification comes through your phone, like a text, email, or calendar alert. It’s surprisingly simple, with no major learning curve or programming involved! It arrives in a beautiful box like this, which is also its charging station.ringly review stylespygirl

Open it up, plug it in to charge fully (takes a couple hours the first time), while that’s happening download the Ringly app onto your phone and start playing with it. It looks like this when you first get it, but will say “Connected” once your ring charges up.ringly review stylespygirl

Ringly is intuitive and simple, and it doesn’t have extra features like talking into it, or navigating anything, like some of the tech watches do. It simply facilitates putting your phone away, for work or special events, etc., while making sure the people you really need to hear from can get through to you.

Once your app is installed, it connects to your Contacts list, and then you can flip a toggle to let the Ringly know if you want notifications from everyone on your list, or just a select few!ringly review stylespygirl

Here’s the fun part: Once your Ringly has charged, put it on your finger, press connect, and then go into your Notifications. Here’s where you can select what kinds of notifications you want; phone calls, texts, Facebook notifications, emails, calendar alerts… Even Uber alerts! Select the ones you want, and then swipe your finger across the field to change it’s color to whatever you want. I love watching the little diamond light up in red, blue, purple, etc. when I play with this feature! 😉 You can also tap the little dots on the right, to decide how many vibrating pulses you want. Play around with it; it’s fun to buzz, buzz, buzz your ring!ringly review stylespygirl

Ringly has been a huge game-changer for me. I do a lot of networking events, and it’s nice to put my phone completely away in my purse, knowing the ring will buzz me if my husband or kids really need to get ahold of me! For those times that the rest of the world can just wait, it’s been a lifesaver. And a ring is something I naturally put on every day, so it’s tied into my fashion and lifestyle seamlessly!

ringly review stylespygirl
Photo by Valerie Davenport / Rhyder bag by Coach

Can this lovely little piece of tech help curb my Instagram addiction? Well, that remains to be seen… But it sure is helping me disconnect from my cell and choose what I focus on in each situation! For that, for affordability, and for just being beautiful, I give the Ringly 5 stars.

XOXO,
Tanya

Ladies, take heart; you don’t have to rely on fast fashion to fill all your wardrobe needs! It’s not as tough – or costly! – as you might think, to add perfectly-fitting pieces from fashion designers. Here’s the key: THINK LOCAL!

Here’s my story: Recently I was trying on peplum tops, and having a heck of a time finding anything that fits my larger bust size, but smaller waist. One of my favorite clothing lines Black Halo does a fantastic job matching my bust-to-waist proportions, and I adore them for it, but I’ve struggled to find anyone else who comes close. Here’s me trying on a peplum top in a popular trendy shop that shall remain nameless… urban outfitters peplum shirtSeriously, it doesn’t even come close to covering my bra. Annoying!

Fed up, I reached out to local clothing designer Dottie Hamann, founder of Retro Hunny. We are blessed to have many incredibly talented people in this community, and Dottie is one of our brightest stars. She custom-creates rockabilly and retro-styled clothing for women of all shapes and sizes, and I’ve been delighted to see her work sashay down multiple runways over the last few years.  Her looks are creative and classic, and this town LOVES her – for good reason!retro hunny

“I’d like a top in red & white gingham for the 4th of July, with halter straps, and can you add a peplum waist?” I asked her… No problem, she told me! One week later, I had my custom-made, perfectly-fitting halter top, with the thoughtful addition of a sweetheart neckline. How cute is this, seriously? I was thrilled to have something that fit my every curve like it was made for me (because it WAS, lol!), and on top of that, Dottie informed me that she had decided to name the top after me!!! I’m sooooo honored!!!

So here it is, and the Tanya Top, available in all sizes and just about any color or pattern you want! If you’d like a Tanya Top that fits YOU like a glove, email Chantelle at retrohunny@gmail.com. They cost around $50, plus shipping, unless you’d like to stop by Retro Hunny in person to get yours fitted and made. 🙂

Happy 4th of July, hunnies! 😉

XOXO,
Tanya

P.S., I discovered another amazing aspect of this city, while looking for a place to shoot these photos with Valerie; just 3 blocks from Boise’s major mall is a sheep farm… Seriously! never seen a fashion show like the 208 Tattoo Fest fashion Show! Here’s why…

press pass tattoo festBoise’s annual 208 Tattoo Festival is growing in leaps and bounds, this year bringing in over 5,500 attendants for 2015, it’s 3rd year in operation. Tattoo artists and enthusiasts come from all over the country to participate in this edgy, creative event, and a few even traveled from overseas to be here! But if there’s one aspect of the weekend’s festivities that truly embodied the Fest’s creative and edgy spirit, it was Friday night’s SugarSkulls Fashion Show. (Disclaimer: I had a wedding to attend the following day, and thus unfortunately missed Saturday’s fashion show, but I’m sure it was creative and spectacular also!)

When I heard that Boise’s legendary concept photographer and makeup artistry team Rachel Hope and Unique Angeline Irish were collaborating on a fashion show like no other, I knew I had to be there! I teamed up with photographer Virginia Treat of Treats Photography, and headed to Expo Idaho.

The show began, with dark, gritty music thumping through the speakers, the singer eerily entreating listeners to “Hold my hand…” Two young girls wandered out onto the stage, looking freshly-risen from the grave and a little lost – but also a teensy bit terrifying! Like the type you’d meet on a deserted road, and want to help, the poor dears… Until the moment they literally eat your heart out! 208 tattoo fest fashion show 1A dead horse emerged from the curtain behind them, lurching forward to the music, as the girls stared straight ahead into nothingness. But the moment you feared the horse might attack them, they turned instead and began gently stroking their pet on the head and neck.208 tattoo fest fashion show 2 Soon the smallest of the little ladies mounted up to ride in high fashion off the stage. It was a glorious beginning, and set the tone for the remainder of what promised to be boundary-pushing,  macabre entertainment, with one consistent thread: beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder!208 tattoo fest fashion show

Next, from behind the curtains emerged a most beautiful mermaid, slowly oozing her way across the stage like she was dancing underwater. She slithered and shimmered in the shadows, a fierce aquatic creature you’d be equally entranced by and terrified of, if you met her in her own domain.208 tattoo fest fashion show After the mermaid departed, more fantastical creatures emerged, one by one, to dance across the stage and mesmerize us with their bold beauty… And terrifying darkness.

Towards the end of the show, one final creature came forth, emitting gasps from the audience. The Phoenix arose, ascending on stilts to the awe of all who watched her! She danced,  swaying her wings through the air in a masterful ballet, and everyone held their breath… Later, after the show, ended emcee Dapper Doyle was heard telling her, “I just had several mild heart attacks, watching you do that!” I think nearly everyone did; it was an incredible display of creativity and bravery!

Every character that graced the stage was meticulously styled, from their elaborate makeup to each handmade headpiece, necklace, or dress. Click on the photos and you can zoom in – really close – to check out the incredible detail work that went into each and every aspect of this show. (You can also check out more photos of the rest of the Tattoo Festival, at Treats Photography’s Facebook page, here.)

208 tattoo fest fashion show 19Rachel Hope, Unique Irish, hair stylist Skyla Dawn, and Tiffany LaRocque outdid themselves for the Sugarskulls Fashion Show.  This show would have been right at home in a Portland, L.A., or New York venue, with big-budget lighting and special effects… But thanks to the 208 Tattoo Festival we had the opportunity for a truly epic experience, right here in Boise, and I am so grateful for the chance to see it in person! Fantastic work, to everyone involved – LOVED it!!!

XOXO,
Tanya
