With all the tech jewelry and accessories coming out these days, it’s hard to know what’s going to work best with my needs & lifestyle. The Apple watch, for example, looks really cool, but will I wear it every day? When I came across the Ringly, though, I just knew… Now THAT is something I want!

The Ringly is designed to light up and vibrate when a notification comes through your phone, like a text, email, or calendar alert. It’s surprisingly simple, with no major learning curve or programming involved! It arrives in a beautiful box like this, which is also its charging station.ringly review stylespygirl

Open it up, plug it in to charge fully (takes a couple hours the first time), while that’s happening download the Ringly app onto your phone and start playing with it. It looks like this when you first get it, but will say “Connected” once your ring charges up.ringly review stylespygirl

Ringly is intuitive and simple, and it doesn’t have extra features like talking into it, or navigating anything, like some of the tech watches do. It simply facilitates putting your phone away, for work or special events, etc., while making sure the people you really need to hear from can get through to you.

Once your app is installed, it connects to your Contacts list, and then you can flip a toggle to let the Ringly know if you want notifications from everyone on your list, or just a select few!ringly review stylespygirl

Here’s the fun part: Once your Ringly has charged, put it on your finger, press connect, and then go into your Notifications. Here’s where you can select what kinds of notifications you want; phone calls, texts, Facebook notifications, emails, calendar alerts… Even Uber alerts! Select the ones you want, and then swipe your finger across the field to change it’s color to whatever you want. I love watching the little diamond light up in red, blue, purple, etc. when I play with this feature! 😉 You can also tap the little dots on the right, to decide how many vibrating pulses you want. Play around with it; it’s fun to buzz, buzz, buzz your ring!ringly review stylespygirl

Ringly has been a huge game-changer for me. I do a lot of networking events, and it’s nice to put my phone completely away in my purse, knowing the ring will buzz me if my husband or kids really need to get ahold of me! For those times that the rest of the world can just wait, it’s been a lifesaver. And a ring is something I naturally put on every day, so it’s tied into my fashion and lifestyle seamlessly!

Can this lovely little piece of tech help curb my Instagram addiction? Well, that remains to be seen… But it sure is helping me disconnect from my cell and choose what I focus on in each situation! For that, for affordability, and for just being beautiful, I give the Ringly 5 stars.

XOXO,
Tanya

BABY! Animal prints might be super hot right now, but they’re a fashion statement that can go horribly wrong, if you’re not careful.
Sure, Shania Twain can dance in a cheetah bodysuit while rocking an audience of thousands in a stadium, but that’s not an entirely practical look for the rest of us (no matter how much we wish it were, sigh! …Hearts, Shania.) cheetah print shania twain

HERE IS A STRAIGHT-FORWARD GIRL’S GUIDE TO WEARING ANIMAL PRINTS

1.) Think of any animal print you put on your body as a Statement Piece. Everything else you wear should be subdued, letting the wildcat aspect of your outfit make the loudest statement. Leopard jeans rolled up with heels, a tank top, and a black blazer can look incredibly chic for the workplace, for example. A cheetah skirt with a cheetah jacket and cheetah heels is… TOO MUCH! Don’t go there.

2.) Remember, you only need ONE. One item, in One print. Don’t wear zebra and cheetah together, or the fashion police will hunt you down, tackle you, and haul you off to the zoo. Just… Don’t! (But if you do, we promise to come visit and smuggle you bananas.)

Personally, I adore the Wild Beast line from COACH that’s out right now for Fall 2015; any of these pieces would be a stand-out conversation-starter, when worn as a singular part of your outfit. For example, the watch would look stellar with a white t-shirt, jeans, and heels. The shawl would rock over a sleeveless black jumpsuit, with a messy hair bun. And the bag… Oh my, I’d wear that in a heartbeat, with overalls, a black off-the-shoulder fitted top, and sunglasses. The key is balance!animal print wild beast coach

3.) Animal prints draw attention, so CHOOSE your focus. A cool online boutique Shop Trendy recently sent me these adorable leopard-print wedges. They’re sky-high, but with a padded insole that’s super comfy! They’re great for a late-summer dinner party, with a simple black tank and cropped pants, and a cool necklace from COACH. So purrrrfect! shop trendy animal printshop trendy animal print

(Outfit details below)

4.) Be careful with color. Leopard prints can look fantastic with shades of red: burgundy, coral, and bright red are fantastic accents. Be sure to keep everything else neutral, and don’t go crazy on the accessories. A simple handbag and shoes in tan or black will keep your look chic and grounded. Navy blue also looks amazing with leopard or cheetah. If you’re wearing a black & white zebra print, opt for a pop of color like yellow or hot pink to cheer up the neutral-ness!

5.) When in doubt, try denim. Denim infuses any outfit with a laid-back vibe, so it’s the perfect balance to wild-child animal prints. Pair a fitted cheetah skirt with a white blouse and denim jacket, for example. Or a leopard print tank top with jeans, black ankle boots, and simple gold jewelry.

However you choose to embrace animal prints this Fall, be sure to have fun, and embrace your wild side!

Ladies, take heart; you don’t have to rely on fast fashion to fill all your wardrobe needs! It’s not as tough – or costly! – as you might think, to add perfectly-fitting pieces from fashion designers. Here’s the key: THINK LOCAL!

Here’s my story: Recently I was trying on peplum tops, and having a heck of a time finding anything that fits my larger bust size, but smaller waist. One of my favorite clothing lines Black Halo does a fantastic job matching my bust-to-waist proportions, and I adore them for it, but I’ve struggled to find anyone else who comes close. Here’s me trying on a peplum top in a popular trendy shop that shall remain nameless… urban outfitters peplum shirtSeriously, it doesn’t even come close to covering my bra. Annoying!

Fed up, I reached out to local clothing designer Dottie Hamann, founder of Retro Hunny. We are blessed to have many incredibly talented people in this community, and Dottie is one of our brightest stars. She custom-creates rockabilly and retro-styled clothing for women of all shapes and sizes, and I’ve been delighted to see her work sashay down multiple runways over the last few years.  Her looks are creative and classic, and this town LOVES her – for good reason!retro hunny

“I’d like a top in red & white gingham for the 4th of July, with halter straps, and can you add a peplum waist?” I asked her… No problem, she told me! One week later, I had my custom-made, perfectly-fitting halter top, with the thoughtful addition of a sweetheart neckline. How cute is this, seriously? I was thrilled to have something that fit my every curve like it was made for me (because it WAS, lol!), and on top of that, Dottie informed me that she had decided to name the top after me!!! I’m sooooo honored!!!

So here it is, and the Tanya Top, available in all sizes and just about any color or pattern you want! If you’d like a Tanya Top that fits YOU like a glove, email Chantelle at retrohunny@gmail.com. They cost around $50, plus shipping, unless you’d like to stop by Retro Hunny in person to get yours fitted and made. 🙂

Happy 4th of July, hunnies! 😉

P.S., I discovered another amazing aspect of this city, while looking for a place to shoot these photos with Valerie; just 3 blocks from Boise’s major mall is a sheep farm… Seriously! never seen a fashion show like the 208 Tattoo Fest fashion Show! Here’s why…

press pass tattoo festBoise’s annual 208 Tattoo Festival is growing in leaps and bounds, this year bringing in over 5,500 attendants for 2015, it’s 3rd year in operation. Tattoo artists and enthusiasts come from all over the country to participate in this edgy, creative event, and a few even traveled from overseas to be here! But if there’s one aspect of the weekend’s festivities that truly embodied the Fest’s creative and edgy spirit, it was Friday night’s SugarSkulls Fashion Show. (Disclaimer: I had a wedding to attend the following day, and thus unfortunately missed Saturday’s fashion show, but I’m sure it was creative and spectacular also!)

When I heard that Boise’s legendary concept photographer and makeup artistry team Rachel Hope and Unique Angeline Irish were collaborating on a fashion show like no other, I knew I had to be there! I teamed up with photographer Virginia Treat of Treats Photography, and headed to Expo Idaho.

The show began, with dark, gritty music thumping through the speakers, the singer eerily entreating listeners to “Hold my hand…” Two young girls wandered out onto the stage, looking freshly-risen from the grave and a little lost – but also a teensy bit terrifying! Like the type you’d meet on a deserted road, and want to help, the poor dears… Until the moment they literally eat your heart out! 208 tattoo fest fashion show 1A dead horse emerged from the curtain behind them, lurching forward to the music, as the girls stared straight ahead into nothingness. But the moment you feared the horse might attack them, they turned instead and began gently stroking their pet on the head and neck.208 tattoo fest fashion show 2 Soon the smallest of the little ladies mounted up to ride in high fashion off the stage. It was a glorious beginning, and set the tone for the remainder of what promised to be boundary-pushing,  macabre entertainment, with one consistent thread: beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder!208 tattoo fest fashion show

Next, from behind the curtains emerged a most beautiful mermaid, slowly oozing her way across the stage like she was dancing underwater. She slithered and shimmered in the shadows, a fierce aquatic creature you’d be equally entranced by and terrified of, if you met her in her own domain.208 tattoo fest fashion show After the mermaid departed, more fantastical creatures emerged, one by one, to dance across the stage and mesmerize us with their bold beauty… And terrifying darkness.

Towards the end of the show, one final creature came forth, emitting gasps from the audience. The Phoenix arose, ascending on stilts to the awe of all who watched her! She danced,  swaying her wings through the air in a masterful ballet, and everyone held their breath… Later, after the show, ended emcee Dapper Doyle was heard telling her, “I just had several mild heart attacks, watching you do that!” I think nearly everyone did; it was an incredible display of creativity and bravery!

Every character that graced the stage was meticulously styled, from their elaborate makeup to each handmade headpiece, necklace, or dress. Click on the photos and you can zoom in – really close – to check out the incredible detail work that went into each and every aspect of this show. (You can also check out more photos of the rest of the Tattoo Festival, at Treats Photography’s Facebook page, here.)

208 tattoo fest fashion show 19Rachel Hope, Unique Irish, hair stylist Skyla Dawn, and Tiffany LaRocque outdid themselves for the Sugarskulls Fashion Show.  This show would have been right at home in a Portland, L.A., or New York venue, with big-budget lighting and special effects… But thanks to the 208 Tattoo Festival we had the opportunity for a truly epic experience, right here in Boise, and I am so grateful for the chance to see it in person! Fantastic work, to everyone involved – LOVED it!!!

Village at Meridian
invited me to bless one lucky local mother with a day of pampering, shopping, and head-to-toe makeover for Mother’s Day. Here is the winner’s story! (You can also read about last year’s winner, here.)

Andrea Correa recently turned 37, and found herself a divorced mother of three young children. Her sister Melissa wrote in to nominate her, sharing a little bit about Andrea’s difficult situation, and what a challenge it has been for her. For the last 12 years she’s been a stay-at-home mom, devoted to her children and her family! Now she’s had to walk through a very painful experience, and is struggling to find work to support herself with limited career experience, but armed with a passionate love for her kids and strong will to succeed. This makeover is exactly what she needed, to get a fresh perspective on her wardrobe, bolster her confidence, and prepare herself for the job market!

stylespygirl mothers day makeover beforeOur first meeting was right after her her name was selected: lunch at Grimaldi’s Pizza for a get-to-know-you. I found Andrea surprisingly energetic and joyful, despite her circumstances! She seemed grateful for the opportunity to have the makeover, was very easygoing, and full of laughter. I had a strong suspicion her kids adore her; I certainly grew to!

One week later we met for the makeover, with the Village at Meridian presenting Andrea multiple gift baskets, cards, and presents valued at over $1,000, including a generous gift card to Village Coffee, personalized workout time at Axiom, posh pampering at PURE Health, fun body products from LUSH, and an adorable tank top (pictured below) from Paperie & Pen! Andrea loved opening the gift baskets & presents, and was excited to start shopping.stylespygirl mothers day makeover before meetingPhotos by Ammophotog

First stop: SOMA Intimates, where Andrea received her very first professional bra fitting (something I recommend for EVERY woman!), and some beautiful new undergarments. The right size makes such a difference! If you haven’t had a fitting recently, stop by SOMA; the gracious ladies there really know their stuff!

stylespygirl mothers day makeover soma intimates

Next stop: LOFT, who had graciously donated a sizeable gift card to Andrea! We worked on embracing her body type (hourglass), and I encouraged her to try tops that were less boxy, and more fitted, and the same went for skirts. We talked about color tones that worked best for her, and shopped some beautiful summer wardrobe staples.stylespygirl mothers day makeover loft 1I taught Andrea some layering tricks to create slimming vertical lines with cardigans and/or long necklaces, and she tried a variety of pants, dresses, and tops. She found some beautiful pieces she could wear for job interviews, as well as work easily into her current wardrobe!stylespygirl mothers day makeover loft 2

Then we stopped into White House | Black Market for shoes. Andrea was thrilled to find a beautiful pair of what I call “investment heels;” those perfect, comfortable, high-quality basic black pumps you can wear to work, an event, or just dinner out with friends! She loved these, and knew she would get a ton of use out of them.stylespygirl mothers day makeover whbm

After that we went to Chico’s, who had also donated a nice gift card. Andrea found a couple pairs of great summer capris that she loved, and appreciated the great prices and super-sweet, helpful customer service.stylespygirl mothers day makeover chicos

Next: Lunch! When you’re power shopping – and especially trying on tons of clothes! – it’s a good idea to take a break every 3-4 hours for protein and a moment to clear your head. Huge thanks to Noodles & Company, for hosting our much-needed lunch! Yum. stylespygirl mothers day makeover noodles

Last shopping destination: Evereve, where Andrea very bravely discovered for the first time that – gasp! – she looked AMAZING in skinny jeans!!! stylespygirl mothers day makeover evereveAnd oh my gosh, those shoes, am I right?? She loved this store, and would have happily shopped here for hours, but it was time to move onto…

SB Salon for hair & makeup! Andrea went on ahead to save time, while I stopped into Francesca’s to pick out some lovely jewelry pieces they had graciously donated to her. Thank you Francesca’s!

Andrea wanted a more sophisticated look, but needed it to be something she could easily maintain. The brilliant stylist showed her how to create beachy waves that worked with her hair texture and layers, bringing out the shine and dimension in her lovely locks. stylespygirl mothers day makeover sb salon

Next up: makeup! Andrea was not accustomed to wearing makeup regularly, so she didn’t want something that felt “all made up,” or like there was too much fuss on her face and skin. The Makeup artists used Jane Iredale, and soft, neutral colors to highlight Andreas beautiful facial structure, cheekbones, and eyes. A dash of berry lipstick, just a little bit darker than her natural color, completed the makoever.stylespygirl mothers day makeover sb salon 2

Now it was time for Andrea to dress up in her new clothes, and meet her family in the Village’s center square to show off her new look!

I had a short – but wonderful! – week in Phoenix, Arizona
visiting my beloved Aunt, Uncle, and cousins, and helping my Aunt go through and organize all my recently-departed Grandmother’s belongings. I’ll share more about that in an upcoming post (and tell you about the vintage treasures that blew my mind!), but the purpose of this article is to share about my new favorite place in Phoenix to shop: Poor Little Rich Girl!

My cousin Tiffany raved about this shop, and she has excellent fashion taste, so of course I had to go check it out! It’s a resale/consignment shop, packed wall-to-wall with carefully curated fashion treasures and locally-made jewelry, housewares, and gifts. Fabulous!

poor little rich girl phoenixPoor Little Rich Girl began seven years ago as a consignment store, but has recently moved to a cashout system, giving sellers the best bang for their buck. No matter what the item you’ve sold gets marked down to over time, you’ll receive the initial value up front on your precious treasures! This immediate-gratification system most likely explains why the store is so full of designer brands and current trends! I spotted Coach, Gucci, Michael Korrs, Betsey Johnson, Kate Spade, Diane von Furstenburg, and Tory Burch, just to name a few.

My daughter was with me, and we had a fun time shopping for treasures. She was particularly enamored with the huge necklace display; an old wire mattress frame, laden with jewelry she could walk through, running her fingers through all the pretty things hanging like branches of a magical willow tree! Very clever.poor little rich girl 5

Treefort Music Festival
will descend again upon Boise March 25-29, 2015.
This annual festival, founded as a way to bring big bands to Boise while giving equal ear to emerging local talent, is in its fourth year. And this promises to be its’ gnarliest year yet! Besides 25 venues around town showcasing hundreds of musical acts, this year’s fest will also have a plethora of “Forts” that extend the artistic experience beyond music; Hackfort for the tech-savvy, Comedyfort for giggles, and Kidfort for the little ones are just a few examples. (Click here for info on all the forts.)

treefort gearAnd of course, let’s talk about the clothes for a minute. Any respectable music fest has to have its own fashion style! Along with some really cool official festival gear (above) designed by rad local artists, designers and artisans from across the country will also be bringing their unique goods to Treefort, giving us the opportunity to score treasure we wouldn’t usually have direct access to! One brand that’s a personal favorite of mine is the NAVY PRoject, a brilliant brainchild of vintage re-designer Mary Peffer.

Mary Peffer NAVY PRoject is a unique shop-in-shop experience that combines five principles: art, architecture, fashion, design, and hospitality. Clothing items are designed and curated, whenever possible from vintage finds, with the goal of direct access to the unique items you crave. From vintage festival outerwear to ponchos, rock concert t’s, and hair accessories, the NAVY PRoject aims to be a very personal experience.

Designer Mary Peffer will personally be on-hand Thursday, March 26th from 4-9pm and Friday, March 27th from 11-6 at downtown Boise’s epicenter-of-cool Bricolage to launch her latest line. Come check out this unique shop-in-shop experience! I’m certain you will find special treasures you’ll be proud to wear all festival long… and beyond!

How to Shop Like a Globe-Trotting Pro

friends! Today’s guest post is from Roshan Roghani, Vice President of the luxury body care line
Camille Beckman.
I first met Roshan a couple years ago, when Camille Beckman hosted a holiday pop-up shop inside Boise Towne Square. As a fashion blogger, I love to attend store openings and report on the cool things I find there, but honestly the greatest thing I found that day was a blossoming friendship with one of the nicest, most authentic, and seriously brilliant young women I have ever met.

Roshan is not just the VP of a body care company, she is a financial genius, and has taken Camille Beckman from a beloved American brand (founded by her mother Susan Camille), to an iconic beauty empire adored by local ladies and Hollywood celebrities alike, across all age and lifestyle demographics. How does she balance it all? Her mantra of Gratitude permeates every decision; gratefulness for the love and support of family, friends, and a fiance with a heart of gold. But deeper still is her intrinsic love of earth, humanity, and our connectedness. It’s larger than each of us, this petite powerhouse will tell you. And trust me, you should listen.

Despite a closet full of Chanel, Burberry, Céline, Cavalli, and a jet-set life of globe-trotting and hob-nobbing with the couture elite, Roshan is a deep soul who effortlessly walks a tightrope between humble citizen of earth and corporate power player. She’s purposefully scaled back the trappings of wealth and trend-following, and has chosen a path of “investment shopping” that I deeply admire, which means making calculated choices about the things she accumulates, based on their personal value to her.

How does she determine that value, in-the-moment and for the long run? Here, in Roshan’s words, are her tips for investment shopping:

  1. The first thing you must ask yourself is, Do you LOVE it? You know within five seconds of putting something on if you love it. If not, don’t even allow it to be a consideration. When we have to convince ourselves to like something, we rarely end up wearing it.
  1. Does it make you better?  A lot of us hold on to things because we feel they have some value that we can’t quite place. If you don’t know why something is important to you, it’s time to get rid of it.  We are often unconscious of how goods make us feel, and so we collect things to fill a void.  I know I did; it’s very common and not something to be ashamed of. Nothing will make you happier than realizing this and letting things go. You can express yourself much more uniquely with a small closet of things that you truly love than a closet full of things you never wear.  Things don’t make us better, but the wrong things CAN drag us down.
  1. Do you use it? Simple.  We hold onto things we don’t use waiting for that ONE occasion that rarely or never comes. We all need to learn to be okay with letting go with joy.
  1. Value. No thing has true value because we live in a world that equates the value of something to a piece of paper. Value should not equate to a dollar sign, but rather what you feel for something in your heart. I have things from Chanel and from street vendors that are of equal value to me; there is no hierarchy.  We need to stop buying to fill the void and instead buy things we love, and appreciate them in a way that does not use them to determine who we are. Your clothes are not a reflection of what’s inside, but rather an expression of what we’d like people to see.  Be comfortable in yourself and have love for everyone around you; that’s all that truly matters.

Roshan Roghani
