had a blast this Saturday, attending Boise’s annual
Carnevale festival for the very first time!
The costumes were amazing, the entertainment was otherworldly, and the people were fabulous! My FAVORITE part: I had the honor of walking in a fashion show for Nena Earl, a very talented & creative designer!!! Her theme was “music,” and my costume was made almost entirely out of sheet music paper. So amazing! (And hard to sit down in, ha ha ha!) I felt like a ballerina, and had the time of my life. Can you tell…? 😉

Thank you Nena Earl for the fun modeling opportunity! And special thanks to Amanda Woods for the wild hair, and Cynthia Woolsey for the fabulous makeup!!!

See you next year, at Carnevale!!!

XO,

Tanya

Warby Parker Style ~ An Eye For An Eye

Not everyone knows this, but I’m a grown-up missionary kid. (MK, PK… I’m ok! Ha.) If you spend much time around me, you’re bound to hear stories of train rides to Siberia, playing in the streets of Bangkok, chasing tarantulas in the mountains of Honduras, and eating roadside jerked chicken in Jamaica. My childhood was largely spent traveling the globe, learning about different cultures, helping people, and surviving by the generosity of others.

So when it comes to people or businesses that “give back,” pay it forward, pass it on, etc., heck yeah, I’m on board! I know what it’s like to have so little, that even the smallest token of generosity can change a person’s day, week, or even life.

I recently discovered a cool company called Warby Parker, who create vintage-inspired eye wear, AND give generously to our world. They’ve been featured in Forbes, The New York Times, Oprah, GQ, and Vogue! But the coolest thing about Warby Parker, is the fact that for EVERY pair of glasses you buy, they DONATE a pair to a needy man, woman, or child. How awesome is that? To date, they have distributed over 250,000 pairs!

What’s so important about glasses? According to Warby Parker’s website, glasses can increase one’s productivity by 20%, making them “one of the most effective poverty alleviation tools in the world!” And access to affordable eyewear is very limited, for almost 1,000,000 of our world’s citizens. That equates to 15% of the world’s population being “unable to effectively learn or work because they can’t see clearly.”

I love Warby Parker, for what they are doing to help the needy! Not only are there sunglasses hip & fun, but they’re also surprisingly affordable, especially for eco-friendly, designer eyewear. AND I have the added satisfaction of knowing my dollars are pulling double-duty, in providing much-needed sight to someone in this world that desperately needs it!

And that, my friends, is no small token of generosity. 🙂

Happy Birthday to me…

I live in Boise.

I love bargain shopping,

But these shorts were just ME!

Over the years I have learned to be careful with impulse buying. You know that thing where you spot something, and just HAVE to have it? Often times, I would purchase something because it was a bargain, and I was determined to “make it work.” But it doesn’t always work out that way, and would end up passing things on having only worn them once. What a waste, when I could have saved those pennies for something I really LOVED! You’ve never done that, right? Pretty sure I’m the only one, ha ha ha. 😉

The other day I was scrolling through Twitter, and spotted the new collection by designer Milly, for Banana Republic, inspired by “Summertime in the Hamptons.” One of the photos featured these sweet little elephant shorts… And I swooned! Oh my gosh, I could wear those with SO MUCH in my closet! But I don’t really have the budget right now for full-priced Banana Republic, so I put my craving on hold, at least for now. I’ll wait till the sale, I told myself; I can be patient…

Then I got my first birthday card, from my sweet Mom & Dad. And there was a check inside. Yay! Having a birthday always causes me to wax somewhat philosophical, so having that check in my hand inspired me to think, “Life is short; spend it all in one place!” Lol, so deep, right? 😉

I headed to Banana Republic, where they had ONE pair of elephant shorts left in my size. They weren’t on sale; they weren’t a “bargain”… But sometimes a birthday girl just has to treat herself to something nice (especially when she has a little help from super-sweet parents!) Thanks, Mom & Dad, for my favorite new shorts! I have a hundred outfits to work around their elephant cuteness. 🙂 So maybe they ARE a bargain, after all…!

XO,
Tanya

Have you ever purchased something that felt too special to pass up, even though you knew it would be a bit of a sacrifice? Tell me about it! Comment below – I love to hear your opinions & stories. 🙂 XO!

I set out to do a blog about fashion from the Roaring 20’s, inspired by my recent viewing of this Spring’s “The Great Gatsby” film. I wanted to talk about how the 20’s were a time of women breaking free from their corsets, and embracing modern freedoms. I intended to discuss how that era brought new opportunities for women, like voting as equal citizens, and – gasp! – driving motor vehicles!

But then I fell in love with a necklace. I know, so girly of me, right? But it wasn’t just the necklace, pictured here in these photos by the amazingly-talented Nena Earl. It was the women behind the necklace, and her journey, that I wanted to share with you today…

Do you know a woman with “Awesome Sauce,” that something special that brews deep within her, and makes her stand out in this world? Sure, Oprah has it, Martha Stewart has it, Lauren Conrad has it, Gwenyth Paltrow, … Successful women who inspire us, and make us wonder, “What could I do in this life, if I had awesome sauce like her?”

I went to a women’s business class last week and listened to speaker Kim Flynn, who insisted that every woman has Awesome Sauce. Seriously! I have Awesome Sauce, YOU have Awesome Sauce… I looked around at the other women in that room, some of them my friends, and thought “It’s true! All these ladies are full of Awesome!” Sitting next to me was my friend Denise Vesecka, the founder of Unigon Specialties, who made the necklace in these photos…

I think Denise’s work is amazing, and this particular piece captivated me. Perhaps it’s more Cleopatra than Great Gatsby, but it’s beautiful and unique, a true work of art! And through it, I can see Denise’s Awesome Sauce. Some days, she’s not sure she has the Sauce, working hard to sell her handmade pieces at fairs and expos. But I see it. I see it when she custom designs something for someone she cares about (Like my favorite “Style” necklace!). I see it, when she creates things that move beyond jewelry, and become works of art that transcend an outfit or fashion trend.

Denise has Awesome Sauce, and i think this necklace is one of her most Saucy creations yet. I am watching for the day that Hollywood comes knocking on Denise’s door, and we start to see her designs in blockbuster summer movies!

Denise helps me believe in my own Awesome Sauce. Do you believe in yours? What does your Awesome Sauce look like? What would you do or change about your life, if you could truly live into that Sauce inside you?

Find it. Live it! YOU have Awesome Sauce.

XOXO,

Tanya

I recently saw the visual smorgasbord film that is The Great Gatsby, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s novel. Yes, I liked it. I loved the unconventional musical choices, connecting the revelry of the Roaring 20’s with the party anthems of our time. I was frustrated at the injustice of tragedy, and wanted to shake Daisy and scream at her a little. But most of all, I adored the fabulous flapper fashions!

So how does a modern girl infuse a little Great Gatsby style into her wardrobe, without looking too costumey? Easy, thanks to the current trend of sheer blouses, dresses, & skirts! I started with a vintage sheer 1920’s dress from Abandoned Fashions, a local couture pop-up shop, and modernized it with a fitted black tube skirt and bandeau top underneath. Add a platform heel and fun jewelry, and I’m ready to rock any summer cocktail party!

XOXO,

StyleSpyGirl

I’m heading to the coast this Summer! Yay! And after years of traveling all over the world, I’ve learned some important packing lessons.
Wrong way to pack: Taking all your faves. Unless you are able to take unlimited luggage, and maybe someone to help you carry it, do your best to limit yourself to the essentials.
Right Way to Pack: Take only items that match each other! Stick to a limited color pallet, and make sure every piece matches at least one-three other pieces. This creates a mix & match wardrobe that will keep you prepared for any situation!
Extra Credit: Stick to one metal tone. If your favorite jacket has gold trim, sticking to all metal hardware on jewelry, handbags, & shoes will streamline your suitcase, and cut down on time you could be enjoying your vacation, instead of coordinating outfits!
Enjoy the sun!
