Have you noticed lately how quickly this fabulous little town is growing? Kohl’s, DSW, Nordstrom Rack, Gordman’s, Rosauers, and Whole Foods have all arrived in the past year or two, and rumor has it more fun stuff is on the way. (I’m looking at you, Trader Joe’s – get here soon!) 😉  

The latest addition to Boise’s shopping landscape comes straight from Europe, with love, style, and cozy-wonderful winter wear! It’s called H&M, which is Swedish for “Hot things I Must have!” Just kidding, it stands for Hennes & Mauritz, the store’s Swedish founders. 😉

With fun, fashion-forward styles and crazy-low prices, some people have compared H&M to another trend/budget store, that we’ll just call Eternally 19 (ha ha!). But when I visited with Nicole Christie (one of the company’s execs) the day before their Boise Grand Opening, I found that comparison to be way off the mark!

Nicole took Alysha and I (my fab photog!), and fellow fashion friend Kellie Levesque, on a personal tour around the store, explaining how the clothes are created. Every single item, she told us, is designed in-house by H&M’s fashion team in Sweden (apart from their collaborations with guest designers like Jimmy Choo,  Comme des Garçons, Kylie Minogue, and Versace, just to name a few!)

Other stores tend to select and purchase their clothes from a variety of wholesalers. Not H&M! Every thing you see in the store was created and designed in Sweden. That Scandinavian influence is light in some areas, and more bold in others. Many of the sweater designs are fabulously Euro, while more subtle touches show up in things like truly fashion-forward maternity wear, and thick, fleece-lined tights for little girls.

Another cool thing about H&M is that they are constantly bringing in new stuff – and seriously discounting the old. In fact, Nicole told us a new shipment of merchandise arrives every day! That means that while some classic items will stay consistent throughout the season, shopping at H&M will be a new adventure every time you go in. Do you love happy shopping adventures? This is NOT Your Daddy’s Coach!

It all started with a wallet. Or more specifically, a comment from my sweetheart that went something like, “Hey babe, since it’s close to Christmas, I thought I’d just mention that my wallet is almost worn out.” Hmmm… I love those hints, but as a women’s stylist and shopping pro, men’s accessories have never really been my forte. Back when we were dating, I could just run into Hot Topic and buy him the coolest wallet with studs and skulls they had on display! But he’s in management now, at a big tech company; maybe it’s time for something a little more “grown up!”

I went shopping at all my usual favorite stores, and quickly discovered: men’s wallets are kind of boring! Black or brown – um, awesome…  I decided that my guy deserves something with a little more style!

While walking through the mall, I happened to pass the new Coach store, and a display towards the back of the store caught my eye. Is that men’s stuff? Coach makes stylish things for guys?? Of course I just had to go look!
.
That’s when I spotted her, out of the corner of my eye, perched prettily in the corner like a young starlet, waiting for her moment in the spotlight: my Dream Purse. She was blue – what, not black?? I always get black! – and so stunning that my legs moved towards her of their own accord.

I had found the “Willis” purse, new this year to the Coach line, and very new in patent leather blue. And I was in love! So pretty, eye-catching, and more versatile than I could have imagined. Mine! I slung her over one shoulder, and knew instantly that we were meant to be together. 🙂

Eventually, with Willis purse in hand, I drifted back to my original purpose: the men’s accessories. I was surprised at the style selections – solids, stripes, logos, patterns! – and impressed by the quality. The super-nice saleswoman (their customer service is top-notch!) told me that Coach has long made men’s accessories, but only recently have they carried the items in stores. She went on to tell me that every wallet is triple-stitched, by hand, for long-lasting durability. In fact, all Coach handbags and wallets are hand made! Even the classic little stagecoach logo is painted by hand, which is why you can find little variations in paint color and brush strokes.

As one of the most-imitated and copied brands in the world, Coach still works very hard to ensure their style and quality are unmistakable  and of the highest caliber. And super, duper pretty! They also have a life-time repair warranty! The manager told me she has had people bring in Coach items that are over 20 years old, and Coach has repaired them, every time! As a self-proclaimed Bargain Huntress, I was beginning to understand the appeal of what the fashion industry calls an “investment piece.”

I have to admit, I was impressed by the fun, dramatic styles the store had available. My concept of Coach has always been that they are a “classic” line, geared more towards mature women of high taste. I’m not known for my maturity (lol!), but I was super impressed by all the gorgeous, on-trend pieces I spotted throughout the store! Shiny patents, bright colors, even sequins; styles ranged from bohemian-luxe soft handbags  to structured, retro pieces inspired by classic Coach pieces of the past few decades. Personally, I love a vintage-look structured bag with a little drama; the kind that won’t slump to the ground like a leather beanbag when I set it down!

In the end, I was pleased as punch to find the perfect wallet for my sweetheart; it’s black leather, with a couple burgundy and tan stripes. Very manly and classic, with just a little something extra! I’m so excited for him to pull it out of his Christmas stocking – he’ll love his new grown-up wallet… and I can’t wait to show him what he got ME, too!

When hot New Orleans’ t-shirt designers Skip N’ Whistle contacted me about participating in their “Tacky Christmas T-shirt Campaign,” I couldn’t wait to see what crazy/cute little thing they were going to send me!

My first impression upon pulling my Tacky T from the package was, “Ooh, so soft!” My second impression was, “Yay! A women’s t-shirt that’s actually shaped like a WOMAN!” One of my fashion pet peeves is clothing designers that slap “feminine” designs on boxy, boy-shaped shirts, and pass them off as women’s wear. I don’t know about you, but this woman isn’t boxy! 😉

My “Tacky T” turned out to be pretty darn cute. It perfectly matched my favorite Emerson Edwards “Lace Print” skinny jeans from Vault Denim (See “Style Info” below!) With these two pieces in hand, I headed to one of my favorite local boutiques, Apricot Lane, to style up a couple outfits.

If you’ve  followed my blog very long, you know that I love good fashion, and that I totally LOVE people who do good things for others! When those two passions collide, I find myself in a blissful place that I just HAVE to tell you all about! (See my previous article on the opening of Boise’s first Apricot Lane, for another great example of this!)

Recently, a brand new boutique opened in Eagle, Idaho, and I had the privilege of attending their grand opening festivities.  The store is called “Full Circle Exchange,” and I truly believe it represents not only the future of responsible shopping, but also that perfect blend of fashion and humanitarian conscience!

Full Circle Exchange was launched by Mark & Jeanette Priddy, and Mark’s brothers John and Ed Priddy, whose goal is to “work with women entrepreneurs from around the world to bring their artisan goods into the western marketplace.” From purses, to tablecloths, to jewelry, everything in their boutique tells a story, and has a personal connection. For example, the beautiful necklaces made from bullet casings that Ethiopian women gather from around their villages, literally forming beauty from violence; you can’t help but reach out and touch this gorgeous jewelry, and marvel at its’ tragic origins.

One of the store’s products, in particular, instantly touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes. Nomi Network is a line that produces handbags and accessories that boast “Buy Her Bag, Not Her Body.” Their items are hand-crafted with pride by women who have been rescued from sex trafficking & exploitation, and receive training, support, and economic empowerment through the Network. To hold in your hands an item made directly by a woman who has been set free, learned a trade, and has a chance to create a new life for herself is both humbling and deeply moving!

Shopping in Full Circle Exchange is an all-around lovely experience, both visually and emotionally. The shop space itself is a stunning blend of rich architectural construction and bright, joyful decor. you heard the news? Me and my fabulous team of brilliant helpers are hard at work to launch a brand new show, here in the Treasure Valley! It’s called the Every Woman Project, and it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before!


We believe that every woman is beautiful, and has something special to share with the world. On this show, we’re going to surprise women, who are “unsung heroes” to those around them, with a budget-friendly, head-to-toe makeover. We will also share their story, and learn what makes them so beautiful to those who love them.

Our goal is to honor women, who give so much of themselves to their family, friends, & communities, that they don’t spend a lot of time on themselves! By sharing their story and makeover transformation with our viewers, we hope to encourage women everywhere that they are beautiful and valuable, and that the world appreciates their light!!

All clothing, jewelry, shoes, hair services, makeup, & everything else is donated by local businesses who want to bless our precious makeover candidates. We will be screening our pilot episode at a Red Carpet event at the Linen Building, very soon!!! (Exact date TBD).  This launch event will assist the project’s fundraising goals for the production of the series by recruiting support and sponsors.  As you may know, filming a 45 minute show can be quite a large cost and the Every Woman Project is about making these videos to celebrate “Unsung Heros”, so fundraising for production costs are necessary to enable the creation of each episode.  Our goal is to produce six episodes each season, and have them available via YouTube and our website.  We hope you join this project by donating to our Kickstarter Campaign, following our Website, YouTube Channel, & Facebook page.
