Village at Meridian
invited me to bless one lucky local mother with a day of pampering, shopping, and head-to-toe makeover for Mother’s Day. Here is the winner’s story! (You can also read about last year’s winner, here.)

Andrea Correa recently turned 37, and found herself a divorced mother of three young children. Her sister Melissa wrote in to nominate her, sharing a little bit about Andrea’s difficult situation, and what a challenge it has been for her. For the last 12 years she’s been a stay-at-home mom, devoted to her children and her family! Now she’s had to walk through a very painful experience, and is struggling to find work to support herself with limited career experience, but armed with a passionate love for her kids and strong will to succeed. This makeover is exactly what she needed, to get a fresh perspective on her wardrobe, bolster her confidence, and prepare herself for the job market!

stylespygirl mothers day makeover beforeOur first meeting was right after her her name was selected: lunch at Grimaldi’s Pizza for a get-to-know-you. I found Andrea surprisingly energetic and joyful, despite her circumstances! She seemed grateful for the opportunity to have the makeover, was very easygoing, and full of laughter. I had a strong suspicion her kids adore her; I certainly grew to!

One week later we met for the makeover, with the Village at Meridian presenting Andrea multiple gift baskets, cards, and presents valued at over $1,000, including a generous gift card to Village Coffee, personalized workout time at Axiom, posh pampering at PURE Health, fun body products from LUSH, and an adorable tank top (pictured below) from Paperie & Pen! Andrea loved opening the gift baskets & presents, and was excited to start shopping.stylespygirl mothers day makeover before meetingPhotos by Ammophotog

First stop: SOMA Intimates, where Andrea received her very first professional bra fitting (something I recommend for EVERY woman!), and some beautiful new undergarments. The right size makes such a difference! If you haven’t had a fitting recently, stop by SOMA; the gracious ladies there really know their stuff!

Next stop: LOFT, who had graciously donated a sizeable gift card to Andrea! We worked on embracing her body type (hourglass), and I encouraged her to try tops that were less boxy, and more fitted, and the same went for skirts. We talked about color tones that worked best for her, and shopped some beautiful summer wardrobe staples.stylespygirl mothers day makeover loft 1I taught Andrea some layering tricks to create slimming vertical lines with cardigans and/or long necklaces, and she tried a variety of pants, dresses, and tops. She found some beautiful pieces she could wear for job interviews, as well as work easily into her current wardrobe!stylespygirl mothers day makeover loft 2

Then we stopped into White House | Black Market for shoes. Andrea was thrilled to find a beautiful pair of what I call “investment heels;” those perfect, comfortable, high-quality basic black pumps you can wear to work, an event, or just dinner out with friends! She loved these, and knew she would get a ton of use out of them.stylespygirl mothers day makeover whbm

After that we went to Chico’s, who had also donated a nice gift card. Andrea found a couple pairs of great summer capris that she loved, and appreciated the great prices and super-sweet, helpful customer service.stylespygirl mothers day makeover chicos

Next: Lunch! When you’re power shopping – and especially trying on tons of clothes! – it’s a good idea to take a break every 3-4 hours for protein and a moment to clear your head. Huge thanks to Noodles & Company, for hosting our much-needed lunch! Yum. stylespygirl mothers day makeover noodles

Last shopping destination: Evereve, where Andrea very bravely discovered for the first time that – gasp! – she looked AMAZING in skinny jeans!!! stylespygirl mothers day makeover evereveAnd oh my gosh, those shoes, am I right?? She loved this store, and would have happily shopped here for hours, but it was time to move onto…

SB Salon for hair & makeup! Andrea went on ahead to save time, while I stopped into Francesca’s to pick out some lovely jewelry pieces they had graciously donated to her. Thank you Francesca’s!

Andrea wanted a more sophisticated look, but needed it to be something she could easily maintain. The brilliant stylist showed her how to create beachy waves that worked with her hair texture and layers, bringing out the shine and dimension in her lovely locks. stylespygirl mothers day makeover sb salon

Next up: makeup! Andrea was not accustomed to wearing makeup regularly, so she didn’t want something that felt “all made up,” or like there was too much fuss on her face and skin. The Makeup artists used Jane Iredale, and soft, neutral colors to highlight Andreas beautiful facial structure, cheekbones, and eyes. A dash of berry lipstick, just a little bit darker than her natural color, completed the makoever.stylespygirl mothers day makeover sb salon 2

Now it was time for Andrea to dress up in her new clothes, and meet her family in the Village’s center square to show off her new look!

week, I had the thrilling opportunity to work with
The Village At Meridian on their HUGE Mother’s Day Makeover Giveaway.
A drawing was held, and one lucky woman was gifted over $1,000 worth of gift cards and services from The Village, LOFT, White House | Black Market, Soma, Francesca’s, Oconik, Menchie’s, and the newly-opened SB Salon.

And the winner was… Stacy Schreiter! A mother of two who works at Scentsy, Stacy is super active and loves the great outdoors. When we met up for her shopping day, she talked to me about how important comfort is for her, as she is always on the go, and a very busy woman. Our first stop was Soma Intimates, because a well-fitting bra changes how your shirts and dresses fit, and Soma does a great job of professional measuring and fitting! We armed Stacy with some new “pretty little things,” and moved on to the clothes shopping.

Shopping in White House | Black Market – their summer dresses are so pretty!

Accessorizing in LOFT – Stacey LOVED their new Lou & Grey line; soft fabrics and colors, inspired by loungewear.  She loaded up on great pieces, all for 40% off!Ammophotog stylespygirl mothers day

We found a gorgeous necklace & earrings set at Francesca’s, had a delicious lunch at Kona Grill (they were giving away free cupcakes for moms! Yum!!!), and then moved on to SB Salon for some pampering time!

Hair stylist Amie Reynolds Shoemaker worked her magic on Stacy, using products from Bumble & Bumble.Ammophotog stylespygirl mothers day

After hair, Stacy moved on to makeup, with Kristin Onne Merren. Kristin used natural luxury line Jane Iredale to even out Stacy’s skin tone, and added soft, natural colors to give her an easy-to-maintain, everyday look.

My Birthday Present

Happy Birthday to me…

I live in Boise.

I love bargain shopping,

But these shorts were just ME!

Over the years I have learned to be careful with impulse buying. You know that thing where you spot something, and just HAVE to have it? Often times, I would purchase something because it was a bargain, and I was determined to “make it work.” But it doesn’t always work out that way, and would end up passing things on having only worn them once. What a waste, when I could have saved those pennies for something I really LOVED! You’ve never done that, right? Pretty sure I’m the only one, ha ha ha. 😉

The other day I was scrolling through Twitter, and spotted the new collection by designer Milly, for Banana Republic, inspired by “Summertime in the Hamptons.” One of the photos featured these sweet little elephant shorts… And I swooned! Oh my gosh, I could wear those with SO MUCH in my closet! But I don’t really have the budget right now for full-priced Banana Republic, so I put my craving on hold, at least for now. I’ll wait till the sale, I told myself; I can be patient…

Then I got my first birthday card, from my sweet Mom & Dad. And there was a check inside. Yay! Having a birthday always causes me to wax somewhat philosophical, so having that check in my hand inspired me to think, “Life is short; spend it all in one place!” Lol, so deep, right? 😉

I headed to Banana Republic, where they had ONE pair of elephant shorts left in my size. They weren’t on sale; they weren’t a “bargain”… But sometimes a birthday girl just has to treat herself to something nice (especially when she has a little help from super-sweet parents!) Thanks, Mom & Dad, for my favorite new shorts! I have a hundred outfits to work around their elephant cuteness. 🙂 So maybe they ARE a bargain, after all…!

XO,
Tanya

Have you ever purchased something that felt too special to pass up, even though you knew it would be a bit of a sacrifice? Tell me about it! Comment below – I love to hear your opinions & stories. 🙂 XO!

Great Gatsby Style, Part 1!

I recently saw the visual smorgasbord film that is The Great Gatsby, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s novel. Yes, I liked it. I loved the unconventional musical choices, connecting the revelry of the Roaring 20’s with the party anthems of our time. I was frustrated at the injustice of tragedy, and wanted to shake Daisy and scream at her a little. But most of all, I adored the fabulous flapper fashions!

So how does a modern girl infuse a little Great Gatsby style into her wardrobe, without looking too costumey? Easy, thanks to the current trend of sheer blouses, dresses, & skirts! I started with a vintage sheer 1920’s dress from Abandoned Fashions, a local couture pop-up shop, and modernized it with a fitted black tube skirt and bandeau top underneath. Add a platform heel and fun jewelry, and I’m ready to rock any summer cocktail party!

XOXO,

StyleSpyGirl
