Here’s my daughter, and why I think SHE is such an epic kid…

This is my little angel, who knows she’s pretty darn cool. Oozing self-confidence and swagger, flipping her hair around and rolling her eyes at my terrible jokes, she’s 9 going on 19, and it freaks me out!

But my little snuggle-bug-sweetie is in there somewhere, and I have to remember the swagger is more often than not a front. Her clothes, her style, the faux-teenage voice she sometimes tries on for size, though it’s foreign and cumbersome on her tongue… All of it is not who she is, but rather a series of versions of herself that she tries on for size.

And that’s what makes my daughter EPIC. Because along with the boundless energy and exuberance with which she greats every single day, my little girl is fearless. She is herself, and no one else; not a mini-me, not a tag-along, not a societal shadow of princess marketing or peer-pressure philosophy. My proudest moment to date: I called her from out of town, where I happened to stop by a Disney store, to ask what kind of doll or toy she would most like for me to bring home as a present. Her response, whispered low and breathless: “Weapons!!!”

That’s my Epic kid; the beautiful little girl with a flashing smile, chopped-up hair, tutu dress and black boots… Swinging a hard plastic hatchet in one hand, ready to make the world her own.
